Interestingly, he displays a kind of innocence in his thoughts and actions as he falls in love with his wife. Probably more of a two-and-a-half star rating. I give this book 2. On the other hand, an excursion through “The Oxford Dictionary of Christian Names” revealed some interesting names that were actually used in the medieval period.

Roberta Gellis had a great talent for immersing readers in a world that feels historically authentic and for building three-dimensional and fully fleshed out characters and relationships that avoid being formulaic.

I felt there was way too much time spent discussing the political landscape to the detriment of the story between Bruno and Melusine. Kudos to Gellis for not only doing incredibly deep research, but also for weaving real historical events oh-so skillfully into this fictional story.

It is not until the eighty-sixth page that Bruno and Melusine meet. This is a really nice story that shows we can have an honest romance with a history lesson thrown in without the sexual prominence overtaking our story line.
